Your donation can make a big impact
Financial independence and personal empowerment is critical in breaking the cycle of domestic abuse. In Australia domestic abuse is the main cause of homelessness for women (1). No woman should have to choose between remaining in an abusive home or homelessness – you can provide support by donating today.

Leaving a Gift to The Zahra Foundation in your Will
Leaving a gift in your Will to The Zahra Foundation is an enduring way for you to empower South Australian women and children to live a life free from violence and abuse. Your bequest will support the ongoing development of our programs, services and opportunities that directly support families who have been affected by domestic abuse.
If you wish to support us through a bequest we recommend that you seek independent legal advice before writing or amending your will. This will ensure the wording accurately reflects your wishes. Your legal representative can talk to you about the different ways you can chose to leave a gift, either:
Through nominating and leaving a specific amount of money
Through leaving a share of your estate (what is left of your estate after payment of your debts and expenses and other gifts you may have made).
A clause in your will can be written as follows:
“I give to Zahra Foundation Australia (ACN: 27606985639) for its general purposes the sum of $(insert amount), free from all duties, deductions and charges. The receipt of an authorised officer for the time being of Zahra Foundation Australia shall constitute a full and sufficient discharge of my executors’ duties.”
Or
“I direct that (insert %) of my residuary estate be given to Zahra Foundation Australia (ACN: 27606985639) for its general purposes. The receipt of an authorised officer for the time being of Zahra Foundation Australia shall constitute a full and sufficient discharge of my executors’ duties.”
Please send all information and legal correspondence to Zahra Foundation Australia, PO Box 3082, HILTON PLAZA, South Australia, 5033. If you would like to discuss your bequest, please contact us.
Difference between non-profit and charity
A not-for-profit (NFP) is an organisation that is not run for profit or personal gain. A not-for-profit can legally make a profit but it has to reinvest those profits back into the organisation to further fund its purpose or mission (e.g. to pay for day-to-day expenses, pay staff wages, build infrastructure or launch projects).
A charity is a type of not-for-profit organisation however the main difference between a not-for-profit and a charity is that a not-for-profit doesn’t need to reach a ‘charitable status’ whereas a charity, to qualify as a charity, needs to meet very specific or strict guidelines. In addition to being not-for-profit, a charity must only have charitable purposes (as deemed by Australian law) for the public benefit, not be a government entity, individual or political party and not have a disqualifying purpose (e.g. a purpose that goes against these requirements).
Another difference between a not-for-profit and a charity is that a charity must register and comply with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Once a charity has a charitable status it then qualifies for charity tax concessions (not-for-profits can qualify for tax concessions but they differ from concessions for a charity). If a charity is registered as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) then donations made to that charity are tax deductible.
